A Brief History of Jimi Hendrix Action Figures

Funko Toys, a company most widely known for their Wacky Wobbler bobbleheads, is the latest to offer up a Jimi Hendrix action figure. The new Funko Jimi Hendrix action figure is part of the Funko Rock Icons action figure line.

The new Funko Force Jimi Hendrix figure is a more stylized (less life-like) versions of previous Jimi Hendrix figures that have been manufactured by other companies like Mcfarlane Toys. Staying true to their less detailed but no less fun way of designing bobble heads and action figures, the Funko Jimi Hendrix figure features a fair likeness to Jimi Hendrix. The 6-inch figure depicts Jimi with an oversized head, hands and feet. Collectors of other Funko action figures or bobble heads will be very familiar with the stylized look of the Funko Force Purple Haze Jimi Hendrix action figure. Although it was never a goal of Funko to create a perfect life-like depiction of Jimi Hendrix, the very minimal details on the guitar in Jimi’s hands may be a disappointment to some collectors. On the other hand, Funko has announced that 1 out of every 36 Jimi Hendrix figures will be a special chase figure with a unique paint job. These special chase figures are sure to be a hit with Jimi Hendrix action figure collectors.

Mcfarlane Toys Jimi Hendrix Action Figures:

Although the Funko Jimi Hendrix figures are the newest action figures depicting the legendary rocker, a number of other Jimi Hendrix action figures have been manufactured by other companies. The most well-known Jimi Hendrix figures were manufactured by Mcfarlane Toys in 2003 and 2004. As of late 2009, some of these Mcfarlane Jimi Hendrix figures are being resold on the secondary collector’s market for more than 5 times their original value!

Mcfarlane Toys Woodstock Jimi Hendrix Figure

The first Mcfarlane Toys Jimi Hendrix action figure was produced in 2003. It depicted Jimi Hendrix in an extremely life-like and detailed action figure based on Jimi’s appearance at Woodstock. The Jimi Hendrix Woodstock figure featured Jimi Hendrix in teal pants with a fringe shirt that was a fashion statement of the times in the United States in the 1960’s. In addition to the Jimi Hendrix figure, a number of accessories were included to create a complete display. The action figure base to display the Hendrix figure is a stunning replica of an original section of the stage at Woodstock. The base has a very realistic look of wood… just like the original Woodstock stage. To make the effect even more stunning, the Mcfarlane Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock figure is packaged with additional action figure accessories like guitar effect pedals, a stack amp, a microphone and microphone stand.

Mcfarlane Toys Jimi Hendrix Monterey Pop Festival Action Figure

Following the success of the first Mcfarlane Toys Jimi Hendrix action figure in 2003, Mcfarlane quickly followed up the original with a second figure. The Monterey Pop Festival Jimi Hendrix action figure recreated one of the most memorable moments in rock music history. This stunningly detailed action figure depicts the rock god coaxing flames from his burning Fender Stratocaster guitar just as he did in real life in 1967 at the festival. Just like the original Jimi Hendrix Woodstock figure, this figure also includes a base to display the figure. This time, the stage base is designed after the look of the stage at the Monterey Pop festival. To top of all the details, in addition to the guitar accessory, the figure also includes a nice effect of flames coming from the body of the guitar, a pack of matches, a bottle of lighter fluid and a stack amp.
